APSEA Parents Association Mandate

The APSEA Parents Association was formed in November 1990 to support families of deaf and hard of hearing children. We assist the families of almost 700 deaf and hard of hearing children in the Maritimes.

Our primary goal is to ensure that every child who is deaf or hard of hearing achieves his or her full academic and social potential.

Our long term goals are:
1. to promote public and professional awareness and education
2. to disseminate information to other parents on deafness and on services available
3. to ensure that necessary services are being provided
The Parents Association is made up of parents whose children have a wide range of hearing loss, from mild to profound, and who choose various options of communication and teaching We support all families in the choices they make for their families. The ages of our children range from birth to age 21. All families receiving services from APSEA are on our mailing list.

We are associated with various local groups throughout New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and in contact with families in PEI.

When parents discover that their child is hearing impaired (deaf or hard of hearing) they want to talk to another parent who understands their concerns. The Parents Association can put you in touch with someone in your area through the local support groups. Our Parents Helping Parents directory enables us to do this. We may have the answers you are looking for, or you can lend a shoulder to a new family.

We share information with other parents through our quarterly newsletter, Listen Up. If you are looking for information or have something to share, let us know.

We provide input to APSEA on issues concerning all deaf and hard of hearing children. We meet four times a year.

The Annual Spring Workshop is an important highlight of our year - we share information, we learn, meet new friends and catch up with old friends.
